Overview Worldwide
Market
The total market in 1996 showed slow
growth based on a poor performance in the
emerging markets of the pacific basin and
more especially the dominant market in
this region Japan that declined.
The more mature markets of Europe and
North America showed sustained growth
although European governments are
implementing measures to contain sales.
The US government does not regulate prices
in the US market although market pressures
from third party payers (HMOs and
Medicaid) have contained price rises to
1.8% in 1996. The increasing use of
formularies is going to continue to have a
sustained downward pressure on US prices
in the near future.
The Latin American market showed healthy
growth although this made a
proportionately small contribution to
world sales.
All markets in the world are seeing
pressures on their growth either from
government or insurance schemes placing
pressure on growth. The likelihood is for
slow but sustained growth, meeting the
healthcare needs as populations age or
expand.
