Drug
sales through retail pharmacies in twelve key markets closed
at $204.7 billion, a 9% growth for the twelve-month
period from December 1998 through to November 1999.
- The
world market continues to maintain steady growth of 9%,
as first reported in September 1999.
- The
largest region, North America continues to lead, rising
15% to reach $88.8 billion, adding 1% since the last report.
- Growth
across the top five European markets remains stable at 7%
with a value of $54.3 billion. In this region, only Spain
is showing particular improvement, up by 1% from last month
to 12%, aided by an 18% growth in CNS drugs.
- The
Japanese market, valued at $46.4 billion, shows an incremental
1% increase in the rate of growth, to 7% in the 12 months
to November. This compares to -1% for the corresponding
period a year ago.
- Sales
in the top three Latin American markets have decreased by
8%, with the total value reaching $12.3 billion. In the
two larger economies of Brazil and Argentina, growth rates
have slowed dramatically to -24% and -3% respectively. However
Mexico is still growing at a rapid 20%.
