Global pharmaceutical market growth accelerates to 11% in 1999

Leading Therapy Classes

The top ten therapy classes accounted for nearly 30% of the total world market in 1999. Four out of the leading ten - Cholesterol & Triglyceride Reducers, Antirheumatic Non-Steroidals, Antipsychotics and Oral Antidiabetics - are growing at 20% or more, year-over-year.

The Antiulcerant class was valued at $15.8 billion in 1999, and remains the leading therapeutic class worldwide, as it has for the past nine years. Representing 5.3% of all audited global pharmaceutical sales, antiulcerant sales were up 12% year-on-year. AstraZeneca's Losec/Prilosec (omeprazole), the world's leading antiulcerant product and number one selling drug, accounts for $5.7 billion, or over 36%, of all sales in this class.

The Cholesterol & Triglyceride Reducers class grew a very strong 21%, placing it second in sales rankings. Antidepressants, the third-largest class of drugs, experienced 17% sales growth in 1999. With 26% growth and over $5 billion in sales, antipsychotics was the fastest growing of the leading therapy classes.
