Global pharmaceutical market growth accelerates to
11% in 1999
Leading products
Looking at the total audited
world market, AstraZeneca's Losec remains the top-selling
drug, with $5.7 billion in 1999 sales and 17% growth,
down from the 35% growth recorded in 1998. The continued
success of Merck & Co's cholesterol-lowering drug
Zocor (simvastatin) made it the second most sold drug
in 1999, with $3.9 billion in sales and 11% growth.
Of the top ten selling drugs, Warner-Lambert and Pfizer's
cholesterol drug Lipitor (atorvastatin) enjoyed the largest
year-over-year growth in sales, with 66% growth and $3.8
billion in sales.
Overall, the fastest growing product worldwide was Sanofi-Synthelabo
and Bristol-Myers Squibb's anti-stroke drug Plavix (clopidogrel),
which enjoyed a 329% increase year-over-year and $598
million in sales. Plavix was ranked 69th in worldwide
audited 1999 sales. Johnson & Johnson's anti-infective
drug Levaquin (levofloxacin), ranked 54th in worldwide
sales, was the second-fastest growing drug in 1999, with
101% growth.
