AstraZeneca's Potential Megabrands

CEO Dr Tom McKillop has highlighted five compounds at an advanced stage of development in AstraZeneca's pipeline as having blockbuster potential. These are:

  • Nexium (esomeprazole) - the follow-up to Losec (omeprazole), filed both in Europe and the USA with a launch anticipated in the second half of 2000
  • ZD 4522 - AstraZeneca's 'superstatin' (licensed from Shionogi) and potential competitor to Lipitor, in phase III trials
  • H 376/95 - a new antithrombin, entering phase III trials with NDA scheduled for 2001
  • Viozan - a dual dopamine and beta agonist in phase III trials for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with NDA scheduled for the second half of 2001
  • Iressa (ZD 1839) - has potential in the treatment of several types of solid tumour, currently in phase II trials.

Dr McKillop stated in December 1999 that AstraZeneca had more than ten other compounds at an earlier stage of research with megabrand potential. For more of his comments, see IMS HEALTH's Pharmaceutical Company Profile on AstraZeneca.
