AstraZeneca's
Potential Megabrands
CEO
Dr Tom McKillop has highlighted five compounds at an advanced
stage of development in AstraZeneca's pipeline as having
blockbuster potential. These are:

Nexium (esomeprazole) - the follow-up to Losec (omeprazole),
filed both in Europe and the USA with a launch anticipated
in the second half of 2000
- ZD
4522 - AstraZeneca's 'superstatin' (licensed from Shionogi)
and potential competitor to Lipitor, in phase III trials
- H
376/95 - a new antithrombin, entering phase III trials
with NDA scheduled for 2001
- Viozan
- a dual dopamine and beta agonist in phase III trials
for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD), with NDA scheduled for the second half of 2001
-
Iressa (ZD 1839) - has potential in the treatment of several
types of solid tumour, currently in phase II trials.
Dr
McKillop stated in December 1999 that AstraZeneca had more
than ten other compounds at an earlier stage of research
