Blockbuster History
In
the period 1994-1998, the total pharmaceutical market grew
by 24%, but the top 20 products grew by 42%, according to
AstraZeneca CEO Dr Tom McKillop. Between 1998-2000, the
top 20 brands are estimated to grow by 75%, and the market
will be dominated by megabrands.
In
1998, according to Dr McKillop, 23 megabrands (using the
old definition of sales in excess of $1 billion) were on
the market, including Lipitor from Warner-Lambert/Pfizer,
Prozac from Eli Lilly and Norvasc from Pfizer. By 2002,
the number of potential megabrands has been estimated at
50, and these could represent 24% of the total pharmaceutical
market, according to Lehman Brothers.
