Around the world, governments
and health insurers are trying to control the ever increasing
spending on prescription drugs. As some top-selling products,
for example Prilosec and Claritin,
near patent expiry, even the US Food and Drug Administration
is planning a public advertising campaign to encourage the
use of generic pharmaceuticals, which already account for
45% of ethical prescriptions. Moreover, US launches of generic
copies may be hastened by proposed changes to the Hatch-Waxman
legislation.
It is
thus an opportune time for IMS HEALTH to introduce a new
addition to the IMS
World Review franchise - IMS World Review
Generic. As Laura Darling, Senior Marketing Manager
at IMS, commented, "In the US alone, drugs with annual
sales of more than $60 billion face patent expiration in
the next 10 years, so assessments of generic markets and
opportunities will become increasingly important to pharmaceutical
manufacturers."
The
new publication is available now, and provides an overview
of the unprotected and generic opportunities in eight key
markets worldwide:

Germany |

This unique service gives sales
and volumes of molecules in the unprotected markets according
to the type of brand. By
identifying drugs that were off-patent and unprotected by
Supplementary
Protection Certificates by
the end of 2001, and extracting those molecules and products
deemed irrelevant to the database (such as certain natural
and diagnostic products), IMS has been able to evaluate
the sales of the key players, the most attractive therapy
areas, and the major forms, products and molecules, to provide
a comprehensive and validated actual measurement of the
industry - enabling pharmaceutical companies to assess competing
products and determine which therapy areas and forms of
drug packaging offer the best market opportunities.
According to IMS World
Review Generic, sales of unprotected pharmaceutical
products in the eight key markets totalled $113.4 billion
in 2001, with generics accounting for $50.7 billion.

The USA is by far the largest
market for generics, totaling $30.5 billion in 2001. According
to the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, there
were 320 generic drug marketing applications (ANDAs) in
2001. In terms of growth, however, significant increases
were also seen in the other North American markets, Canada
and Mexico. In Europe, Germany showed a generic market valued
at $5.5 billion, and a growth rate of 3.1%, whereas Italy,
although a smaller market, showed stronger growth at 3.5%.

Sales and volumes, growth from
the previous year, and market shares are all analyzed in
IMS World Review Generic, to give a good indication
of true value in terms of US dollars, local currency dollars,
euros, standard units, and kilograms. The unprotected (i.e.
off-patent and relevant) market areas are then broken down
into their sales and volumes of original brands, licensed
brands (i.e. the branded market), and unbranded and other
brands (i.e. the generic market).
Product features
IMS World Review Generic
leverages the data foundation of MIDAS,
IMS' global system that tracks the sales volume and market
share of more than one million pharmaceutical brands. It
offers analyses of:
- the 50 leading manufacturers
selling unbranded and branded generic products
- their 10 top-selling products
in each market
- plus sales of the 50 leading
generic products internationally and in local markets
(top 150 in total)
- and sales of leading 50
product forms
- with the top five international
products in all therapy classes.
The unprotected pharmaceutical
market is defined as all drugs that were off-patent at year-end
2001, and is ranked by brand type. The products are categorized
as being marketed by the originator, a licensee, as an unbranded
generic or another brand.
IMS
Generic Planning
is also available, which provides an overview of generic
opportunities arising over the next 10 years.
IMS World Review Generic
is available on CD-ROM or on the web via www.imshealth.com.
The IMS Viewplus software allows for the creation of charts
and graphs, and easy exporting of data into MS Word or Excel.
