According to IMS Health's Pharmacast
& Beyond, in seven leading territories the antidepressant
(N6A) market grew by an average of 16.1% between 1989 and
1998.
In Poland, the class grew by 70.4% between 1992 and 1998.
In the eight countries analysed, Japan saw the lowest growth
rate, at only 5.0%. P&B forecasts that in the future (CAGR
1998-2008), the antidepressant market will grow in these
eight countries by an average of 4.2%.
While much of the growth in antidepressants is due to the
introduction of newer, more effective agents, with fewer
side effects (for example the selective serotonin reuptake
inhibitors, or SSRIs), some growth can also be attributed
to the use of antidepressants in 'lifestyle'
disorders. These are complaints that, whilst not life-threatening,
can impact quality of life.
Looking at Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain
and the UK, Pharmacast & Beyond found the breakdown of prescriptions
for antidepressants on average was as follows:
