The Second Generation Quinolones

These quinolones have proved very effective against the pathogens causing serious respiratory tract (RTI) and urinary tract infections (UTI) and offer good concentration in these areas. However, there are some restrictions on their use that lie at both ends of the age scale.

  • They tend not to be indicated for children and young adults because of their chondrotoxicity side effects.

  • With elderly people who are often receiving a cocktail of drugs for unrelated conditions, the drug interaction potential may be problematic.

  • Another side effect, seen in some quinolones, is phototoxicity and this has been a problem with those most potent in terms of antibiotic activity.

  • An extremely rare but serious side effect noted with one of the most potent fluoroquinolones has been liver toxicity.
